Amid a political uprising in a South American mining outpost, a roguish adventurer (Georges Marchal) drifts into town and converges with a beautiful, stonehearted whore (Simone Signoret), an idealistic yet ineffectual priest (Michel Piccoli), an aging diamond miner, and his pretty, deaf-mute daughter.
